Gladys M. Harmon, 98, Leavenworth, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at her residence.
She was born on May 2, 1921 in Leavenworth KS to Charles and Bertha (Doty) Morehead. Gladys lived most of her life in Leavenworth except for a few years in Lowemont and Effingham KS. She attended schools at Jefferson, North Broadway, Nettie Hartnett and Leavenworth High School, graduating in 1939.
Gladys met and married Myron Parsons in January 1941 and they divorced September of 1963. She then married Hugh D. Harmon on October 1, 1965 and he preceded her in death on April 21, 2006.
She did volunteer work in her earlier years at the VA center and Cushing Memorial Hospital. She also taught Sunday school class the Methodist church for years. She was a very active woman, busy raising 4 children, teaching Sunday school and then in later years going to work at Ft. Leavenworth. Gladys was employed in the allied personnel section at Ft. Leavenworth, retiring from civil service in 1974. She loved to dance, play golf, spend time at Padre Island every winter, but most of all she loved spending time with family and friends. She was a very positive lady, always there to help anyone who needed her, always looking for the best in people and she herself was very independent and hated asking for help. Her favorite saying in her later years was “It is what it is”.
She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse, sisters Mary Nadean and Lillian Barron and brother Bill Morehead. She is survived by 2 daughters, Sherry Hartwell, FL and Trudy (Dick) Skaggs, MO. 2 Sons, Larry (Doris) Parsons, FL and Jerry (Rosa) Parsons, Honduras. Step son Ken (Sue) Harmon, Leavenworth and Step daughter Barbara (Dave) Bramlett, Leavenworth. 14 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild and another due in October. Gladys looked forward to seeing this new great great granddaughter so I guess she will now get to see her before all of us. Many loving and caring nieces and nephews. Memorials in her name can be forwarded to the Council on Aging or First United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be on Monday, September 16, 2019 at 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 422 Chestnut St., Leavenworth KS with a Memorial service to follow at 12:00 pm.
Gladys is now in her heavenly home with all her family members. So let’s not mourn or be sad, but celebrate her 98 years of life and joy.
